To be able to persevere when things don’t end up the way we want is so difficult and something I feel I have been learning recently. The reason the book is called Garden Song is that, to me, the garden is a great metaphor for the kingdom of heaven. Then Song is the expression of the garden. In this painting, the bird boldly lifts its head, singing up to the sky. One of my favourite artist quotes is by Monet when he says, “I would like to paint the way a bird sings”. There is something so beautiful and natural about our expressions of wonder and worship, being like a bird singing. Not forced, but an overflow of gratitude and joy. Size: 11" x 14"

I think this looseness captures a sense of atmosphere, and you can almost feel a gentle breeze flowing through the fur. I love the contrast of subtle beauty and the dangerous intensity of big cats. I am reminded of Mufasa in The Lion King on top of Pride Rock, saying to Simba, “Everything the light touches is our kingdom”. Size: 16" x 20"

- [Fury](https://micahhayns.com/product/fury/) - Original Piece: Charcoal on Paper, 2023 From the book Garden Song. Illustrating Psalm 22 - “Save me from the mouth of the lion”. This is the same psalm Jesus quotes on the cross when he exclaims - “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”. In this psalm, the mouth of the lion is being used as a metaphor for death. In my drawing, the bright white teeth cut through the black background like chisels. The lion’s head appears without a body, almost as if it is emerging out of nowhere, catching us by surprise. The harsh scratchy marks in the background cut into the paper and make angles like daggers, and the lack of colour creates an eerie, intense and lifeless feeling. I wanted to capture the moment when we feel overwhelmed by resistance in life. When we are overcome by fear and opposition, and things feel hopeless in the face of our own savage lions. This is the darkness Jesus went into on the cross, but he also overcame it when he overcame death. This drawing is a reminder of that. Size: 18" x 24"

You can almost feel the kiss of the lioness on her cub’s head. The warm feeling echoed by the deep and rich orange of the savannah. The lioness is painted in lots of detail, whereas the brushstrokes are looser on the cub. I think this captures a sort of fuzzy feeling that we feel when we are being kissed! Size: 12" x 18"

I then wanted the background to be plain blue, but because of the underlying collage, there are vertical creases. This not only creates a raw and textured effect, but it also gives the impression of falling rain. The painting is titled “Embrace” and is about the ecstasy and passion of love and how romantic love feels. The woman’s arm stretched out, leaving her body vulnerable. The man clings to her, fixing her gaze with care and sensitivity, not letting go. Size: 18" x 18"

This painting is about the power of Christ’s love for us. Notice how Jesus’ hand on the right is drawn with definition, with a pronounced vein running through his arm - full of life with light beaming around it. However, the other hand on the left is fading away, into darkness. His arm comes from high, pressing into the picture, stretching out, moving towards the other hand. In contrast, this hand is being pulled away out of the picture, whilst simultaneously reaching out. This drawing illustrates Jesus’ love for us, reaching out after us in the darkness but also the simultaneous contrast of resistance and longing which we have to receive that love and life. It reminds me of Michelangelo’s Last Judgement painting in the Sistine Chapel, which illustrates the spiritual battle of faith. Size: 30" x 20"

So what we are passionate about is what we are willing to suffer for. I think it is important to let our passions engulf us, like an inferno, because then we are completely transformed and ready to walk in that transformation. Size: 18" x 24"

I hope this painting can inspire others to lean into the things, passions, interests, and gifts within them that are trying to come out, to embrace them and share them with the world.
